I totally get how chaotic it can be trying to keep things organized with little ones running around you as you try to get any work done. I am deep in it now – juggling two kiddos under two while working from home. I struggled to find a decluttering method that worked for me. I tried the Kon Mari method, the Home Edit method, and others, but nothing quite clicked.
After lots of trial and error, I finally came up with my own (well, really, my husband and I came up with it one late night) holistic approach to decluttering – one that’s practical, efficient, and perfect for busy moms like us. In the next few steps, I’ll share the strategies that have transformed my home – physically and energetically.
I know it sounds woo-woo, but hear me out. By transforming my home and decluttering all the physical and energetic sh*t, my life began to transform. Motherhood doesn’t feel hard because I am not wasting so much time cleaning and organizing. I also got rid of the heavy energy stuck in my home. I decluttered and cleared all that sh*t out of my home and out of my life.
This blog post is all about the best decluttering method that transformed my home and my life.
Step 1:Set an intention for your space.
Before you begin decluttering, take a moment to set an intention for the space you are working on. This could be a specific goal you have in mind, such as creating a peaceful living room for relaxation, an organized and open space playroom for imaginative play, or a bedroom that feels like a spa. By setting an intention, you focus your energy and create a guiding principle for your decluttering process.
Step 2: Sort through your stuff.
Next, begin sorting through the items in the space. This is the decluttering phase, where you decide what to keep, donate (or sell if it is worth the time and effort), and discard. It can be helpful to create three separate piles for these categories and go through each item one by one. As you declutter, ask yourself if each item serves a purpose or adds value to your life.
Step 3: Smudge and cleanse stuck energy.
After you have decluttered the space, it’s time to energetically clear and cleanse it. You can do this by smudging with sage or palo santo, crystals, or simply opening windows to let in fresh air and sunlight. My husband and I do this whenever the season changes from winter to spring and summer to fall. By cleansing the space, you remove any stagnant or negative energy and create a fresh, positive atmosphere.
Step 4: Shine, organize, and decorate your space.
Once the space has been physically and energetically decluttered, it’s time to make it pretty and neat. I deep clean every nook and cranny, and if I come across more stuff that no longer serves me, I declutter it. During this process, I’ve hired help to deep clean spaces. It’s up to you.
After a good deep clean, I start thinking about the best way to organize the remaining things in my space. I do this after decluttering because I was tired of organizing all the sh*t in my house, only to have it all become disorganized and dysfunctional after only a few months.
Decorating the space becomes less stressful and more peaceful because I am careful to only add items into my space that serve the intention that I set at the beginning of this process. I love to add fresh flowers, plants, crystals, and soft blankets to enhance my space and make it more inviting.
Step 5: Sustain and transform your life.
Finally, think about how you will maintain the decluttered space going forward. This could involve creating a regular cleaning schedule, implementing organizing systems, or being mindful of what items you bring into the space. By sustaining the decluttered space, you are ensuring that it remains a peaceful and harmonious environment for you to enjoy.
By following these steps, you can create a holistic decluttering process that addresses the physical, energetic, and emotional aspects of decluttering. This approach can help you create a space that not only looks great but also feels great and supports your overall well-being.
